1. ADS-B System

ADS-B System Components

  • ADS-B Components

    • GPS

    • ADS-B Ground Stations

    • ADS-B Out Transmitter: Transmit line-of-sight signals to ATC ground receivers and to aircraft receivers

    • ADS-B In Transmitter: Receive the lateral position, altitude, and velocity of transmitting aircraft and present this data on the cockpit display of traffic information (CDTI)

  • ADS-B Services:

    • Precise real-time data to controllers

      • Immediately indicates when an aircraft deviates from its assigned flight path

      • Has an effective range of 100 nautical miles to enhance traffic conflit detection and resolution

    • Traffic data on a cockpit display of traffic information (CDIT)

      • Shown on a dedicated display or integrated into an existing display

      • Displays aircraft with transponders that are not ADS-B equipped using the traffic information service-broadcast (TIS-B)

    • Traffic data for ATC and pilots to monitor aircraft surface movement

    • Flight information service broadcast (FTS-B) - textual and graphical weather products and other flight information, such as TFRs and special use airspace status

  • ADS-B Data Links

    • 1090ES

      • For operations at any altitude

      • Required for operations at or above 18,000 ft. MSL

      • Enables TIS-B

      • Does not eanble FIS-B

    • 978 UAT

      • Limited to altitudes below 18,000 ft. MSL

      • Enables TIS-B and FIS-B

    • Both

      • For operations at any altitude

      • ADS-B Out on 1090ES

      • ADS-B In on both 1090ES and 978 UAT

2. Radar

  • Radar Operation

Radar Operations
  • Radar Limitations

3. Transponders

  • VFR Modes

Transponder Modes

  • Transponder Codes:

    • 1200 - most VFR operations

    • Discrete Code - Assigned by ATC and used in Class B or C airspace, or when you request VFR radar services

    • 7500 - hijacking

    • 7600 - two-way communication failure

    • 7700 - emergency, such as an onboard fire or engine failure

  • Operating Your Transponder

    • Before your taxi from parking:

      • Set the altitude reporting mode (ALT)

      • Enable ADS-B

    • When you are airborne

      • Operate on ALT

      • Use the appropriate code or the code assigned by ATC

      • Operate ADS-B equipment in the transmit mode unless otherwise requested by ATC

      • If ATC requested it, press IDENT to enable the controller to easily identify you

    • After landing when you are clear of the active runway

      • Maintain altitude reporting mode and ADS-B Out transmissions

      • Do not turn the transponder or ADS-B to STBY or OFF until arriving at parking

  • ATC Transponder Instruction

Transponder Modes

4. Flight Service

  • Using Flight Service:

    • Preflight

      • Plan your flight:

        • 1-800-WX-BRIEF or 1800wxbrief.com

          • Obtain a weather briefing

          • Check NOTAMs

          • File a flight plan

        • 1800wxbrief.com

          • Use flight plan aids to determine departure time, altitude, and route

          • Register for adverse condition alerting service (ACAS) - taxt/email notifications of adverse conditions after you file a flight plan

    • Surface/Departure

      • Activate your flight plan using:

        1. 122.2 MHz or the local FSS frequency

        2. The EasyActivate email link

    • Enroute

      • Flight Service provides

        1. Updated weather

        2. Assistance in lost or emergency situations

      • You are encouraged to provide:

        1. Pilot reports (PIREPs)

        2. Reports of ADS-B, TIS-B, and FIS-B malfunctions

    • Arrivals/Surface

      • Close your flight plan using

      • 1-800-WX-BRIEF

      • The EasyClose email link

Search and Rescue (SAR)

5. ATC Facilities

  • Control Tower Services

Control Tower Services
  • Interpreting ATIS

Interpreting ATIS example
  • TRACON and ARTCC Services

TRACON and ARTCC Service
  • Traffic Advisories and Safety Alerts - Pilot Responsibility

    • Traffic Advisories:

      • You are responsible for collision avoidance

      • Inform the controller:

      • Looking for traffic

      • Negative contact

      • Traffic in sight

      • Maintain visual contact until the traffic is no longer a factor

    • Safety Alarts - Warn you if, in the controller's judgement, your aircraft is in unsafe proximity to terrain, obstructions, or other aircraft. These alerts are contingent upon the capability of the controller to recognize unsafe sutuations

  • Vectors, Sequencing, and Separation - Pilot Responsibilities

Vectors, Sequencing, and Separation
  • Interpreting Traffic Advisories

    • Clock - no wind correction for controllers
