Long live the?sad banger. Many of the decade’s best songs could be categorized as such, born out of both a need to express pain and mission to exorcise it through dance. Now,?Haim?have taken matters into their own hands. On “Now I’m In It,” their?second new single of the year, the trio underscores the fear of losing oneself with a dancefloor-friendly synth backdrop. The lyrics depict Danielle Haim’s spirals, the sort of breakdowns she admittedly feared publicizing in the context of a Haim song: “Looking in the mirror again and again/Wishing the reflection would tell me something,” she sings. “I can’t?get?a hold of?myself/I can’t get outta this situation.”

A throbbing bassline drives “Now I’m In It,” drawing instant comparisons to Taylor Swift’s “Style” or the type of production that saturated?Maggie Rogers’ January?debut. In the song’s second half, the synths scale back to foreground piano and drum solos. Though the song does feel a little more Haimy with some organic instrumentals, a glaring awkwardness results from the otherwise electro-pop aesthetic. Still, Danielle’s candidness builds a sense of reassurance; “Now I’m In It” might not conjure the same cathartic magic as some of its sad banger forebearers, but at the very least, it offers a gentle reminder that you’re never in it alone.
