Released last year on vinyl, the London duo’s cartoonish bootleg finally gets a digital release–it rips.
London duo?Two Shell?emerged in 2019 with a lean, austere take on contemporary UK bass music that sounded right at home on?Livity Sound, the Bristol label that has spent the past decade forging a singular style out of sharp angles, metallic textures, and dusky shadows. Since their debut, though, their music has become more colorful, awash in giddy UK garage rhythms, hiccupping R&B snippets, and unusually chipper major-key synths. They’ve got a particular thing for?big, attention-grabbing samples—the kind that capture the ears of not just rapturous ravers but also copyright lawyers, which is presumably why some of the releases on their label Mainframe Audio have been vinyl-only.
At least until now. “home,” originally pressed on wax last November, finally received a full digital release last week. Which is a good thing, because the tune’s a hoot. “home” dives into the party without a care in the world, brandishing a sped-up vocal melody over bubbly chords and a rollicking breakbeat. Like many bootlegs, it boasts a proudly unvarnished sound, and there’s something cartoonish about the whole mood, from the fluorescent tone colors to the Chipmunks-like vocal processing. To borrow a phrase from documentary filmmaker Errol Morris, it sounds fast, cheap, and out of control (in the best way!), like a scratched-up thrift-store LP played back at 45 on a Fisher-Price turntable. The song overflows with the simplest sort of joy; a tremolo-like filter applied to the voice suggests the fluttering nerves of a fresh infatuation. Which seems fitting: For those previously unfamiliar with the duo, this may be the start of something beautiful.
借用紀錄片導演Errol Morris的一句話來描述——“It sounds fast, cheap, and out of control (in the best way!)”,這首歌聽起來就像一張被刮壞的廉價唱片正以45轉速在費雪牌唱機上播放。
